My name is Mariah Matias and I was born and raised in inner city Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am a first-generation college Senior majoring in Earth and Environmental Science at Lehigh, where I have been conducting wildlife habitat research in Dr. Joan Ramage’s Remote Sensing Lab. I strive to complete a Master’s degree, and eventually a PhD, in a discipline focused on the conservation and greater understanding of wildlife. My non-academic work and life experiences include serving as an animal care technician at a local animal shelter, chaperoning for my high school overseas trip every Spring break, and fostering neonatal kittens with any spare time.

The Eckardt Scholars program granted me the privilege of exploring my academic and research interests as soon as I got to Lehigh. I was able to meet some amazing friends through program events like class dinners with our program advisor and at ton of crafting sessions! Eckardt has also helped me to advance my academic career by offering funding opportunities. In December of 2019, I will be presenting my research at an international conference in Spain thanks to funding support from Eckardt. This program has truly helped me to grow both personally and academically.
